MASTER CLASS Dance & Cinéma - (LA)HORDE - nov. 20 2024 - Cineum - 14h30

Director of the CCN Ballet national de Marseille since 2019, (LA)HORDE has brought together artists Marine Brutti, Jonathan Debrouwer and Arthur Harel since 2013.
Through films and performances (Novaciéries (2015), Cloud Chasers (2016), The Master’s Tools (2017), Cultes (2019), Room With A View (2020), Ghosts (2021), choreographic works (Night Owl, (2016), To Da Bone (2017), Marry Me in Bassiani (2019), Room With A View (2020), (LA)HORDE questions the political scope of dance and maps out the choreographic forms of popular uprising, whether massive or isolated, from raves to traditional dances and jumpstyle.
Their exploration of the new dynamics of circulation and representation of dance and the body that are developing online has led them to form the concept of ‘post-internet dance’. By diversifying the media used, (LA)HORDE explores the chance discovery offered by this new territory and offers a range of perspectives on the rebellion of these communities.
Created with the artist Rone, Room With A View is their first choreographic work with the Ballet national de Marseille, now made up of twenty-four dancers of fourteen nationalities. The following year, the collective invited four choreographers for a mixed programme: Lucinda Childs, Tânia Carvalho, Lasseindra Ninja and Oona Doherty, each embodying an emblematic, inclusive and committed choreographic style.

In 2022, (LA)HORDE presented Roommates, a programme of six short pieces linking hyperrealism and minimalism by Lucinda Childs, Claude Brumachon and Benjamin Lamarche, Peeping Tom, Cecilia Bengolea and François Chaignaud and the collective itself, as well as a major dance exhibition, We Should Have Never Walked on the Moon, created in Cannes as part of a week-long residency in situ, mixing the musical and live-action film worlds with the choreographic avant-garde. In 2023, the collective created Age of Content, its last choreographic work with the Ballet national de Marseille.
The (LA)HORDE collective won the student prize at the MOV’IN Cannes international dance film competition in November 2023 with the film GHOSTS . As part of the cultural outreach activities organised by the Festival de Danse Cannes – Côte d’Azur France, a meeting is planned with students from the Université Côte d’Azur. It will take place on Wednesday 20 November 2024 at the Cineum in Cannes La Bocca at 2.30pm and will be attended by Jonathan Debrouwer, co-founder of the (LA)HORDE collective. This master class is intended for MOV’IN Cannes screening panels. It will enable you to grasp the artistic challenges of a dance film and give you the keys to understanding the scoring criteria for the short films you will be watching.

For two hours, Jonathan Debrouwer will present the work of the collective through their stagings, film productions, video installations and choreographic creations. We will learn about the process of making their film GHOSTS, the way in which dance and film are linked and how the collective combines these two arts through the dance film, while taking account of the contemporary issues from which they draw their inspiration. We’ll be looking at the technical and artistic aspects of the project from all angles.
