Recreating legendary works whose traces have been erased, almost like a police investigation! Revitalising these to make them current is the real challenge. Nonetheless, this is what Dominique Brun achieves through this programme, intended to pay homage to Nijinsky and Nijinska.

Les Noces, Un Bolero and Le Sacre du printemps: these three works conceived around a century ago by Bronislava Nijinska and Vaslav Nijinsky are honoured in a programme that brings together brother and sister and emphasises the modernity of their choreographic vision.

BINTOU DEMBÉLÉ

S/T/R/A/T/E/S Quartet

Creation 2015
French Riviera Première

Choreography : Bintou Dembélé
Dance hip-hop and Krump : Bintou Dembélé, Michel Onomo (Meech)
Music : Charles Amblard – Voice : Charlène Andjembé

Bintou Dembélé, one of the great female figures of hip-hop, sheds light on the history inscribed in our bodies, whether personal or colonial.”

Bintou Dembélé, recognised as one of the pioneers of hip-hop in France, confronts memory. In S/T/R/A/T/E/S Quartet, artists initiate states of the body from hip-hop and krump and revisit this memory, touching on African-inspired jazz, blues and polyphony music. This piece is emblematic of the choreographer’s work, as it lays the foundations for the relationship between dance, music, voice which would be spectacularly deployed in the opera-ballet Les Indes Galantes which marked her 2019 debut at the Opéra de Paris.

Kernel

Creation 2021 – World Première
Coproduction and order from Festival de Danse Cannes – Côte d’Azur France
Choreography : Pierre Pontvianne – Dancers : Léna Pinon-Lang, Jazz Barbé and Clément Olivier
Sound : Pierre Pontvianne

The solo Janet on the roof, choreographed by Pierre Pontvianne, releases a flood of images and emotions, magnificently carried by Marthe Krummenacher – an exceptional dancer.

Trained at the École de Danse Rosella Hightower, winner of the Lausanne Prize in 1999, Pierre Pontvianne presents Kernel: commissioned by the festival, referring to this core – at the heart of that which develops, unfolds and transforms. The solo piece Janet on the Roof is a fall, an ineluctable movement, deploying an infinity of images in which each time and each space mark both the desire for a change and the sensation of an end, plunging the spectator into this interstice located between stupor and amazement.

World première
Coproduction Festival de Danse Cannes – Côte d’Azur / Théâtre de Grasse

Système Castafiore is unparalleled in the choreographic landscape. They bring us closer to the truly marvellous while delivering a fantastic critique of our modern world. The same is true of the creation presented at this edition of the Festival.

With its ability to project itself into unprecedented phantasmagorias, Système Castafiore keeps its disproportionate imagination intact and invents a universe of its own with its language, its sounds and its costumes. In their new creation, the company delivers the hymn of an extinct species, imbued with ancient rituals – but whose future remains to be invented.

As a symbol of romanticism, the cradle of pointe and the birth certificate of the tutu, La Sylphide is a monument in the history of dance.

As a symbol of romanticism, the cradle of pointe and the birthplace of the tutu, La Sylphide is a monument in the history of dance. Created in 1832 by choreographer Philippe Taglioni for his daughter Marie, the ballet was an immediate success. As such, in 1836, more than half a century before Marius Petipa, the Danish August Bournonville offered a new version based on the unpublished music of Løvenskiold.

ROCÍO MOLINA

Al fondo riela (Lo otro del Uno)

Creation 2020 – French Riviera Première

Choreography and dance : Rocío Molina
Guitares : Eduardo Trassierra et Yerai Cortés

The Madonna of contemporary flamenco is never where you expect her to be. In her latest creation, she invites two guitarists, Eduardo Trassierra and Yerai Cortés, to create a dialogue between the most classic style and a radical expressive power.

Rocío Molina is a prodigy. She is capable of the most astonishing technical feats, with her freedom and her creativity always transporting us to new territories. By promoting an encounter between the musicians Yerai Cortés and Eduardo Trassierra, the Andalusian artist makes flamenco sweat in a succession of echoes and reflections, playing on the relationship to the Other, with her signature freedom of inspiration.
