The scene has become cult: a little man in a black suit and hat is suspended by his arms from the hands of a giant clock in an American skyscraper. With Safety Last! released in 1923, Harold Lloyd’s burlesque film became a legend. One hundred years on, Antoine le Menestrel pays tribute to an actor who has always been a source of inspiration for him. Imagining a vertical choreographic style adaptable to a specific architecture and event, he presents his world premiere in parallel with the Festival’s launch of the brand new MOV’IN Cannes dance film competition. It couldn’t be more fitting! To open the awards ceremony, the man who describes himself as a “dream-maker” will climb the walls of the cinema, designed by Rudy Ricciotti, which is hosting the screenings. And like the hero of the film finding a neighbour from floor to floor, at each level he will meet a local artist, including Marcia Barcellos from Système Castafiore, the young circus artist Manouk Guibert and the double bass player Jean-Christophe Bournine from Nice, to whom he has commissioned a creation of a few minutes on the theme Ascension-Descension. Not forgetting the acrobats specialising in Parkour, Anthony Denis and Loup FrHeaven, who will be working alongside him.
In this way, the arts will be brought together with local residents, festival-goers, film-goers and dancers in a joyous collective celebration. Thrills guaranteed
