Projection a dancer's world
A cinematographic itinerary is proposed in connection with the Festival’s programming, the opportunity to deepen his knowledge around major figures of dance
A Dancer's World
Short film by Peter Glushanok with Martha Graham.
1957, USA, 31 min
Screening with Janet Eilber, Artistic Director of Martha Graham Dance Company
“As she prepares to play the role of Jocaste, Martha Graham introduces us to her company, talking about the life, art and technique of the dancer.
A Dancer’s World is a beautiful film because it shows dance where you don’t expect it. The editing alternates the dressing room, where Martha Graham is shown putting on makeup before entering the stage to interpret Night Journey while meditating on the formation of the dancer, and the company’s dance sequences.
Martha Graham’s styling, dressing, evokes the world of dance: how one becomes a character, the need for discipline in the studio, the time it takes – years of exercise – to access simplicity, spontaneity, at the moment of the theatrical act.”
