TANIN TORABI

Iranian choreographer and director

Tanin Torabi is an Iranian-based dancer and filmmaker who works in choreography, performance and film, exploring the links between these artistic expressions. With a background in sociology, Tanin holds an MA in Contemporary Dance from the University of Limerick, Ireland. With over 10 years’ experience in dance filmmaking, she is best known for her one-take short films set in the urban spaces of Tehran. Her films have received numerous awards in categories such as ‘Jury Prize’, ‘Creative Vision Award’, ‘Best Artist Film’, ‘Best Inspirational Film’, to name but a few. Her films have also been studied at numerous academies internationally.

In 2019, she was featured by Dance Magazine as one of the “9 screendance artists you should know”. Tanin’s latest works include Until, In Plain Sight, The Derive and Invisible Point: Until, In Plain Sight, The Derive and Invisible Point.Alongside her dance film production, she has created a number of solo dance performances and is involved in directing actors in pieces such as Powder Milk and We Won’t See them No More in Iran. Since 2020, she has performed in works by renowned New York choreographer Yoshiko Chuma online and in France.
She has been awarded a 6-month residency at the Cité des Arts in Paris (2023-2024) to work on her new piece Sheno, which is a live performance in collaboration with musical artist Setareh Rahnamaa on the Iranian concept of “Zoorkhaneh” and the role of women in the fight against obscurantism.
