A century after the brilliant Harold Lloyd climbed the facade of a Los Angeles building with his bare hands, this performance renews the feat on the walls of the Cannes Cineum.
The scene has become a cult image: a little man in a black suit and hat, suspended by the hands of the giant clock of an American skyscraper. With Safety Last!, released in 1923, the ludicrous Harold Lloyd became legend. A hundred years later, Antoine le Menestrel pays tribute to an actor who has always been a source of inspiration. Imagining a vertical choreographic writing adaptable to a specific architecture and event, he presents his world creation in parallel with the Festival’s launch of the brand new MOV’IN Cannes dance-film festival. What could be more appropriate! At the opening of the awards ceremony, the man who describes himself as a “dream-maker” will complete his ascent along the walls of the cinema, designed by Rudy Ricciotti, which hosts the screenings. And like the hero of the film meeting a neighbor from floor to floor, he will meet an artist from the local area at each level, including Marcia Barcellos from Système Castafiore, the young circus artist Manouk Guibert, or the Nice bassist Jean-Christophe Bournine, from whom he has commissioned a short creation on the theme of Ascension and Descent. Not forgetting the parkour acrobats Anthony Denis and Loup FrHeaven, at his side along the way.
The result: connecting the arts, along with locals, festival-goers, movie-goers and dancers, in a joyful collective celebration. Thrills guaranteed!
Antoine Le Menestrel, Lézards Bleus Company
Having fallen into climbing as a child, Antoine Le Menestral took part in many international competitions in the 1980s, where he opened new routes on artificial structures. He founded the Lézards Bleus company in 1992 and has since collaborated with a host of artists, including Roméo Castellucci at the Avignon Festival in 2008, and the La Horde collective with the Marseille Ballet in 2021.
